Summer anime preview

Since everyone else is doing it, here’s my quick look at the recently announced Summer 2006 Anime Season! As always, my opinions will be based purely on pictures from the anime’s official sites and often confusing translations from anidb:

Flag seems to be an anime about, well, a flag. Not any normal flag, though, this one has the ability to end a civil war! But the flag gets stolen by terrorists! Okay…

The characters seem kinda rugged, and the anime also sports mecha, which I’m not a big fan of. I’m not really anticipating this one, but as they say, new anime is good anime (I don’t know who really says this).

Night Head Genesis

There’s not much translated info on this anime. What I got from the trailer is that most people don’t use most of their brains. This kid appears to be able to use 100%, which lets him break windows and stuff. The site for this anime is also pretty psychedelic. Also, the name is just plain funny. I’ll definitely check this one out.

Binbou Shimai Monogatari

binbou shimai monogatari.jpg
I like to translate “Binbou Shimai Monogatari” as “The Legend of the Financially Destitute Sisters!” It’s anime about sisters, and they’re poor! While this might not make for action-packed thrills, I have a feeling it’ll work the same way as Binchou-tan. You’ll feel so sorry that you’ll have to keep watching! Plus maybe these girls will be as cute as super poor Fujioka Haruhi!

Hachimitsu to Clover II

honey and clover.jpg
Honey and Clover II (Electric Boogaloo)!!! Yes, as a huge fan of the original anime, I’m definitely looking forward to this. Honey and Clover is really just a simple story of a group of college students, but it makes for good anime. It might be a little romanticized, but whatever. After watching the OVAs, I’m really pumped for the new season, enough to almost kick my mom right in the face! I should really pick up the manga…

Joshikousei translates to “Girl’s High School Students.” Supposedly the anime falls under Seinen (young men’s), Ecchi, and Comedy genres. So I’m envisioning sort of a more mature version of Azumanga Daioh. Or maybe that’s just what I want to see. It also seems like it could be similar to School Rumble (without the boys). I’ll keep an eye on this anime. After all, it does have a cute meganekko in it!

Soul Link
Soul Link.jpg

The most notable thing about Soul Link is that it’s based off of a game by the same studio that created Shuffle! So if you were a huge fan of that anime (I’ve sort of stalled on it myself), you’ll probably want to check out Soul Link. Personally, I think it looks pretty generic (think harem, but in space!). Here’s a short trailer from the official site.

Makai Senki Disgaea
Makai Senki Disgaea.jpg

Makai Senki Disgaea is an anime based off of a Strategy RPG by Nippon Ichi. I’m a huge fan of the game, so I’ll be awaiting this anime rabidly.

Ouran High School Host Club (coi xong cười chết đi được)
Ohran High School Host Club.jpg

Ouran High School Host Club is based off of a shoujo manga of the same name. It involves a poor female student who goes to a prestigious high school on scholarship. She ends up breaking a really expensive vase and becomes a slave of the school’s host club. Luckily, they don’t realize she’s a girl (or they might make her do other stuff besides hosting…).

Air Gear
Air Gear.jpg

Air Gear is a sports shounen anime based off of a manga done by the same mangaka who wrote Tenjou Tenge. It’s about a guy who enters the world of Air Trek; an inline skate with engines! My guess is that this show will just end up being boring shounen fluff. How interesting can flying rollerskates be?

When I originally heard that there was an anime called “NANA” coming out, I thought it was going to be an Elfen Lied spinoff! Actually, it’s an anime based off of the super mega popular manga of the same name. It’s basically a coming of age story of a female college student. Maybe it’ll be like Honey and Clover! To be honest, I haven’t had any kind of NANA exposure, manga, movie, or otherwise. Due to the hype (from Os) alone, I’ll have to keep an eye on this one.

Yume Tsukai
Yume Tsukai.jpg

Yume Tsukai is about two “dream users” who have the power to go into peoples’ dreams and exterminate nightmares. I’m not too sure about how they’ll be going about doing that (Comedy? Dorama? Ecchi?), but the designs look pretty cool. Hopefully this anime will turn out better than Yumeria…

XXXHOLiC TV is another popular manga that I’m not familiar with. The plot is about a guy who can see things that other people can’t (like in Tsukihime?). Overall, the plot sounds fairly generic; the important part is that the manga is originally by CLAMP, who has done other popular series such as Chobits, Angelic Layer, and Cardcaptor Sakura. The art looks pretty sweet; I’ll check it out (there’s pretty much no anime that I won’t though…).

Strawberry Panic! (ko coi uổng cuộc đời ^^)
Strawberry Panic!.jpg

Strawberry Panic! is about three all girl’s schools where men are totally not allowed. It’s been described sort of as a cross between Sister Princess (sister harem) and Maria-Sama ga Miteru (school yuri). Will I be watching this show? Heck yes!

Kamisama Kazoku
Kamisama Kazoku.jpg

Kamisama Kazoku translates to “God Family.” Basically, the main character is the son in a family of gods. He always gets what he wants (because his parents are gods) and so I suppose he becomes really lazy. Apparently he meets a girl and decides to get her without any divine intervention. I wonder what the deal is with the popularity of all of these “I’m a god” shows. Kamichu! Shuffle! (to a degree, right?) and now this. Still, the plot seems pretty interesting.

Kiba (cái này cụng hay hay)

Kiba seems to be a failry generic story about a boy named Zedd, a “Shadow Caster.” He can use his Shadow to fight other Shadow Casters with magic and summoned animals (like pokemon?). This show really looks generic and boring, but other people seem to be looking forward to it. I’ll give it a quick look if it gets subbed.

The anime description for Simoun is just plain weird. I really don’t know how I feel about watching an anime that involves fighter pilot girls who are going to choose to be male or female adults… Having said that, the art looks pretty neat, and it’s definitely a unique plot. I am also weak against girls in goggles (they’re like a form of megane), so watch this anime I will.

Kemono Zume

Kemono Zume.jpg
Kemono Zume is the tale of two star-crossed lovers; A monster, and a monster hunter. Such cruel fate! It’s like Romeo and Juliet, except with swords and claws! So far, all we have to look at is a picture that reminds me of a reverse Blood+. Still, this anime looks promising. The artwork looks sweet, so I’ll watch at least the first episode.

Le Chevalier D`Eon

Le Chevalier D`Eon.jpg
Le Chevalier D`Eon already sports one fatal flaw: I can’t pronounce its name. Besides that, it’s about some crossdressing dude during the French Revolution. Already, this anime reminds me of Glass no Kantai, except not in space… I don’t think I’ll be watching this one.

Zero no Tsukaima (wá tuyệt vời^^)

Zero no Tsukaima.jpg
Zero no Tsukaima looks to me like an anime version of Harry Potter, especially after watching the trailer. It sounds fairly generic; guy gets summoned to another world, makes a contract with a female wizard by kissing… Character designs look pretty good, though. This anime looks like win for now.

Coyote Ragtime Show

Coyote Ragtime Show.jpg
I think I remember seeing the Coyote Ragtime Show the last time I went to Disneyland… Anyway, despite the funky name, this anime is already looking pretty cool. The translation of the plot that I found makes no sense whatsoever, but the trailer is sweet! This anime is giving me, dare I say it, Cowboy Bebop vibes… The animation looks very high quality. Cowboy… I mean, Coyote Ragtime show is high on my priority list for the Summer 2006 anime season.
